Homemade Baked Corn Dogs Squares

This baked corn dogs squares recipe is made from scratch with cornmeal and hot dogs. The cornbread batter is lightly sweet, and it’s baked in the oven for a party food perfect for watching sports games together, kid’s parties, or summer cookouts.

Baked Corn Dogs

If you like classic corn dogs then these baked corn dog squares should be right up your alley. Savory hot dogs are nestled inside a sweet cornbread coating just like the original corn dog you can buy from the store. And they’re lighter because they’re baked, not fried!

They’re kind of like corn dog muffins, but you make it all in one pan and cut into squares instead. It’s an easy recipe to make ahead and serve to kids, adults, and families.

I like to make them with turkey hot dogs, but you can use whatever your favorite hot dog is.

Ingredients & Substitutions

You’ll need a few simple ingredients to make this recipe.

Make the cornbread from scratch like I have, OR simply use a box of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix.

  • Hot dogs – use any variety, but make sure they’re bun length for best results.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Yellow cornmeal – make sure to use yellow for that classic corn taste.
  • Sugar – adds just the right amount of sweetness to corn dog bites.
  • Salt
  • Baking powder
  • Buttermilk – it adds acidity that creates fluffier cornbread.
  • Butter – melted but cooled, and I always use unsalted in recipes.
  • Egg Beaters – or use 2 large eggs.

How to Make It

  1. Prep – preheat the oven, and line an 8 x 8 baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on each side. Spray with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Whisk – mix the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder together in a large bowl, using a whisk.
  3. Combine – mix the buttermilk, melted butter, and egg beaters together in a medium bowl.
  4. Mix – add the wet mixture into dry mixture and stir into a lumpy batter.
  5. Pour – pour a thin layer of batter into the baking pan and add hot dogs on top. Pour remaining batter over hot dogs and spread evenly.
  6. Bake – cook until golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool – let cool for about 10 minutes before cutting into squares, and serve.

TIP: Note which direction the hot dogs are lined up in the batter so that after they’re baked, you can cut ACROSS the hot dogs. Then cut the squares between each hot dog for individual servings.
