Modern Fall Tablescape for Thanksgiving 2025
Decorating a modern fall tablescape sets the scene for Thanksgiving entertaining. You want it to be inviting and memorable so the loved ones that are gathered around feel cozy and welcome. This year, design your table with a monochromatic color scheme and an abundance of pumpkins.

I love when traditional style meets modern sensibility, and I think this table represents that. The colors and decorative items are classic, while the settings themselves are charming and purposeful. The overall look is beautiful and balanced.
Let me walk you through the elements themselves, so you can recreate this table at home. It’s ideal for a family Thanksgiving, a fall dinner party, or a fun Friendsgiving celebration.

Lay The Foundation
The way you choose to showcase your tabletop certainly helps set the scene. If you have a very traditional table you’ll likely stick with that look in your setting, and if you have a farmhouse table, you may keep things more rustic.
Tablecloth. The beauty of the tablecloth is that it helps you start from scratch in whatever style you want. Here, I used a check pattern in a golden-yellow tone. I love using this larger check because it actually looks very neutral as a foundation, but it’s more interesting than a solid color.
I like this particular tablecloth too, because the yellow color is more golden so it works for fall and Thanksgiving.

Build The Place Settings
Placemats. Once you’ve laid the foundation, start building the place settings. Round placemats are my go-to for the base. They take up less room than the rectangle ones, which is important at holidays when you’re packing people around the table.
Dishes. Layer on the dishes according to your meal. I typically put white or cream dinner plates and salad plates (which can be used for dessert too), and for Thanksgiving I added bowls for my pumpkin soup. I love this set with all three pieces with a matte finish.
The stacked salad plates don’t need to be in a matching set with the dinner plates. This is where you can add color or mix and match styles. In this case, all the small plates are in the same off-white color, but the styles are a little different.

Utensils. If possible, I suggest having a few different sets of flatware. They can add personality just as much as the dishes themselves. For this table I love the look of my bamboo handle set. The color coordinates well and they’re more interesting than traditional styles.
Napkins. For napkins stick with a neutral colored cotton or linen. They wash well and last for years. Simply use a spot remover like Shout to help with stain removal if necessary. TIP: Don’t have enough cloth napkins for a crowd? Use these disposables that look and feel like linen.
Pull the napkins through wooden napkin rings and set them on the side of the placemats.
Glassware. Finally, one of my favorite details of a modern table is vintage glassware. I used two sets in an amber tone. These short water glasses have a similar look to my vintage ones, and these stem glasses are new with a vintage design.

Adding a cute place card at each setting is my preferred way to offer a unique and creative detail. I always DIY it using simple items, like the dried Billy Ball stems and thin ribbon.

Create A Centerpiece
Pumpkins. For a modern centerpiece use pumpkins in various sizes and colors. I found these at the farmers market where there’s a wide range of shapes, and hues. Keep it somewhat monochromatic (orange and white) with hints of complementary colors (green).
Place them in a row down the center of the table, zigzagging as you go, and stack a couple of the minis on top of the larger ones.
Candles. Add a little bit of height and interest with taper candles in brass candlestick holders. Stagger them from side to side, tucking them into the space between pumpkins.
Quick Tip
To extend the life of taper candles, put them in the freezer overnight before you burn them. They will melt slower!

Add Details
I prefer to serve the food buffet style so the tablescape remains lovely. Although there are a few items I like to keep on the table so they’re easy to reach when needed. A vintage salt and pepper shaker, a dish or basket of bread or rolls, a water pitcher, and softened butter.
If you’re serving a soup course separately or hosting a soup dinner party, you may want to set a pretty Dutch oven on the table too.

Mood-Setting Extras
Creating a cohesive vibe doesn’t stop at the table decor. In fact the food, the smells, the sounds, all enhance our experience around the table.
Sounds. Put on a playlist to play softly in the background. Growing up and spending the holiday at my grandmother’s house, she always had big band music playing. To this day I LOVE the nostalgia of hearing those orchestras by Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey. Other greats are Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Of course you can always go with Indie bands, jazz classics, or music from a time period you love. You can even start playing your Christmas tunes to jump start the next holiday.
Smells. You don’t want to overpower the smell of cooked turkey with clashing aromas. You can stick with a natural scented candle (vanilla or evergreen pine) in the entryway or bathroom, but you don’t want it near the dining table. Another alternative is a pot of simmering potpourri or spiced cider.
