Fall Tabletop Décor for a Dinner Party
Creative fall tabletop décor for a dinner party at home, featuring the latest trends and a rich color palette. I’ll walk you through the details to set a unique table setting for guests.
This colorful outdoor tablescape is part of my patio decorating feature that’s ready for fall entertaining. I’m completely in love with each and every element and I hope you will be also.
Color
I found plum colored glasses and they complement classic autumn colors beautifully. Combining the purple hue with more traditional tones like orange and golden yellow creates a rich, modern look that’s unexpected.
TIP: Add a complementary color to traditional fall colors.
Table Runner
Use a small rug as a table runner. That’s right, I found this pretty bohemian style rug at Target and thought it would be beautiful as a table runner. I mean I can’t imagine stepping on this lovely rug, can you?
The pattern is perfect and the fringe detail adds just the right finishing touch. The boho style is so on trend!
TIP: Use current trends to inspire your fall table setting.
Break the Rules
Unless you’re hosting an ultra formal event there’s no reason you have to follow the rules for place settings. Creativity and individuality are the name of the game.
Sometimes you run out of room for a “proper” place setting anyway. No worries. Do something unexpected and layer the utensils on top of the charger plates. It’s a space saver and an interesting detail all at once. See how I did it in this elegant Thanksgiving tablescape.
Furthermore, you can place forks on the right, or double up the spoon and fork or knife and spoon, etc. Have fun with it!
TIP: When short on space, get creative with placement and break those traditional rules!
Unexpected Touches
Do you know why you don’t see many printables in my designs? Because I’m just like YOU! I never have the time to create it and print it out. Or I’m always running out of ink in the printer. Or I’m changing my mind about the menu at the last minute.
A pretty menu is nice to have though, and I love the idea I came up with. I found the agate pieces at HomeGoods and decided it would be interesting to display the menu on one of them. You can write on it with a gold glass marker and wallah! A very chic and interesting dinner menu.
TIP: Display the menu in creative ways that your guests won’t expect.
Centerpiece
Did you know that you can fill the little well in a candle stick with water and use it as a bud vase? It’s a neat trick and looks really pretty with a large flower head like this spider mum, placed inside.
Just cut the stem down to about an inch {or however deep your candlestick holder is}, fill the well with water and set the flower inside. Cut a piece of greenery from the yard and add it to one side for more drama.
TIP: Use a candlestick as a bud vase.
Table Decoration
Once again space always seems to be an issue when setting the table, especially when you’re using outdoor or folding tables.
Instead of one big floral centerpiece in the middle, stretch it out and place smaller vignettes down the length of the table.
Use geometric shapes and vessels and fill them with flowers and succulents. It brings in the boho vibe plus there’s something different to look at at every turn.
TIP: Create an eclectic centerpiece with more than just flowers.
I included my laser cut accents for fun. Keep using what you have in different ways.
Customize
Incorporate agate coasters and turn them into place cards. You can write names on them using a glass marker.
TIP: Customize items and use them in different ways.
Party Favors
Combine two elements into one. Give the agate coasters to each guest as a take home gift. Provide a cute little drawstring bag to put it in.
TIP: Personalized coasters as favors.
Bar Cart
Wine is certainly fine, but sometimes guests want a mixed drink during cocktail hour.
Roll out the bar cart and provide one light and one dark liquor. Add a single mixer that will go with either, or can stand alone for those who don’t want alcohol.
Bourbon and vodka are good choices, and juice mixers that will go with both are cranberry, pineapple, grapefruit, or lemonade.
TIP: Keep the bar simple.
Dessert Display
You don’t want to go through all this effort setting up the perfect fall dinner party and then have an ugly pie tin ruin the look, do you! Neither do I, so use a large cloth napkin or piece of coordinating fabric, and tie it around the pie tin. It instantly dresses up your dessert table and hides that unsightly tin.
TIP: Wrap your pie.
I hope you love this fall tabletop décor as much as I do, and you’re inspired to host something fabulous. To make it even easier for you I’m sharing my light & rustic dinner party menu too.
