Easy Nutella Puff Pastry Bites

These Nutella puff pastry bites are quick and easy to make with just 3 ingredients! The simple combination of chocolate hazelnut spread with almonds on flaky pastry is indulgent and delicious. They’re ideal for parties and showers, when you want a hand-held dessert that’s easy to eat.

When you’re hosting a grazing-style party you want a dessert recipe that’s easy to pick up and eat with one hand – similar to appetizers. That’s where these chocolatey, nutty, puff pastry bundles come in to play.

They’re made with the classic Italian hazelnut cocoa spread, and sliced almonds to balance the sweetness, and then folded into little packets that are irresistibly good!

It’s a crowd-pleasing sweet treat that ticks all the boxes for a party dessert:

  • Delicious flavor and texture, and great for any time of the year.
  • Easy to make, and you can make it ahead. Prep them a day in advance and bake when ready, or freeze them.
  • The ingredients are convenient to keep on hand so you’re always ready for entertaining.
  • You can add them to dessert tables for all types of occasions from showers to cocktail parties. No need to serve warm either; they’re great at room temperature.

Step-By-Step Photos

Let the dough thaw according to package directions, on a lightly floured surface. Then roll it out and use a rolling pin to help smooth out the seams and stretch the dough a bit.

  1. Cut the thawed pastry sheet into 9 equal squares. A pizza cutter works great for this!
  2. Add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of Nutella to each pastry square, going from corner to corner as shown. Sprinkle almonds over top of the chocolate spread.

  1. Bring the two side points up and over the filling and help seal them together with water or some egg wash.
  2. Place the packets on a parchment lined sheet pan and brush the tops with an egg wash and a sprinkling of raw sugar. Bake until golden.

Make Ahead

You can make the pastry bites and freeze them for later. Prepare them as directed but do not add the egg wash or cook them. Lay them independently with wax paper between stacks to keep them from sticking together. Store in an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.

When you’re ready to use them, let them sit at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes. Then bake as directed.

Tips

  • Puff pastry rolls come in a box of two, in the freezer dessert section. Keep a box on hand so you’re always prepared to host.
  • For added flavor you can sprinkle lightly with cinnamon sugar before baking, or powdered sugar after baking. To make cinnamon sugar just combine equal parts ground cinnamon and granulated sugar.
  • Try these with chopped pecans instead of almonds if you like. Still delicious!
  • To make these even faster to prepare, spread the Nutella and nuts all over the sheet of puff pastry and roll it up jellyroll style; then slice and bake. For visual details, follow the method used to make these ham and cheese puff pastry pinwheels.

More Party Desserts

Hand held treats are my favorite way to serve dessert for ladies gatherings, standing parties, and tea parties. In addition to these Nutella puff pastry bites, some of my go-to recipes include make-ahead double fudge brownies and Oreo truffles.

For an alternative to chocolate, add these mini cheesecakes or lemon tartlets. They provide balance to a dessert table set up.

Nutella Puff Pastry Bites

Yield: 18 packets
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Easy but indulgent, these puff pastry rolls are filled with Nutella and almonds for a delicious dessert anyone can make. Tie ribbon around them and serve as "diploma" rolls for graduation parties.

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry (2 sheets)
  • 1 cup Nutella spread
  • ½ cup Sliced Almonds

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Optional

  • raw sugar or cinnamon sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400º F.
  2. Thaw dough as directed on the package, and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the puff pastry. If it shows resistance to unrolling, let it continue to thaw so it doesn’t break.
  4. Use a roller or rolling pin to smooth over the seams and to stretch out the dough a little more on each side. Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the dough sheet into 9 equal squares.
  5. To make the bundles, spread about 1 tablespoon of the Nutella down the center of the square from one corner to the opposite corner, followed by a small sprinkling of almonds (see post for photos).
  6. Lift the other two opposite corners of the puff pastry squares and wrap them over the filling, one corner over the other and press to seal. Add a dab of water or egg wash to help adhere the two corners.
  7. Make an egg wash by mixing together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush puff pastry with egg wash. Sprinkle top with raw sugar if desired.
  8. Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for about 10-12 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden.

Notes

To add more sweetness, sprinkle the prepared rolled lightly with cinnamon-sugar before baking, or powdered sugar after baking.

For an even easier preparation, spread Nutella on each sheet of dough and sprinkle with almonds. Begin rolling the dough up jelly roll style, and then cut it about ½ -inch slices and bake flat.

    1. Vinanti, that’s what I would do. In fact, for the future, you could even under cook them a bit and finish them off before hand OR just make them up, keep in refrigerator {or even the freezer}, and cook them when you need to. So many options with puff pastry. 🙂

You can definitely make these ahead and keep in an airtight container, OR prepare them & refrigerate overnight, then bake them the day of the party.
