Spring is full of reasons to celebrate, from anniversaries, to birthdays, to graduations, and more. For my challenge this month, working with BHG products at Walmart, I was appointed the task of creating something for spring entertaining. I opted for a different approach from the usual melamine and soft color palette since I’ve done a lot of spring hues recently for Mother’s Day, Easter, and the balloon theme baby shower.

Instead, I was inspired by special celebrations that happen this time of year like wedding anniversaries, college graduation, and of course, birthdays. Black and white is always welcome when doing more dressed up dinner parties and I’ve been wanting to add some black dishes to my arsenal so that’s the route I took.

Using this matte black swirl dinnerware, I set the table for a special intimate dinner party on the patio. These black and white outdoor seat pads made the end chairs nice and cozy to sit on. See how it all comes together, below.

Hostess Tips for creating a special celebration tabletop

  • Reuse, Reuse, Reuse! You’ll find many of my tables use the same elements over and over again. However, the context is always different so the items never look boring or too common. Here I used the stripe table runner AGAIN,  {see how I used it in my summer soiree here, my 30 minute dinner party here, and a simple neutral tabletop here} but with everything else different, it looks fresh.
  • I used the same alternating trick with the dishes as I did in my Fall table here. It’s a GREAT trick to make things go further. Invest in those white basic plates people, and you can always alternate with other colors and patterns!
  • My DIY laser cut accent cake topper looks perfectly in place here as it tops a cake centerpiece.
  • Beautiful bright flowers add a pop of color to this black and white celebration tabletop.
  • I used horn blowers on the plates to reiterate the “celebration” theme.

TIP: For graduation parties, stock up on post-New Years Eve sales of party ware which have the current year printed on them.

  • A hint of gold is always welcome in a black and white color scheme. I used it here in vases, flatware, napkins, straws, and other accents.

I hope these tips help you get ready for some Spring celebrations! You can set up a stylish table for an intimate dinner party with family and friends without spending a fortune, and by investing in a few eye-catching pieces. Choose a few items that speak to you, or that will refresh your existing space. You can dress up a neutral space by adding some lovely pieces like I did here. I think you’ll love the look!
