9 Red Wine Picks for Fall Entertaining

I’m sharing some of our favorite wines to sip during the cooler months, with prices ranging from about $10 to around $30. You can choose a less expensive one for a weekly happy hour, or a pricier one for a dinner party or holiday.

9 red wines for fall

I’ve mentioned before that I like to switch to red wine in the fall; it just feels more comforting. Maybe because the serving temperature is higher and warms you up rather than “cools you down” like a white wine or rosé in summer. Or maybe because it pairs so well with comfort food that’s popular in autumn.

We love trying new wines, and Malbec or Shiraz are a couple of our favorites for sipping or eating with appetizers. And we like to indulge in Cabernet Sauvignon with a steak, or Chianti with an Italian dinner party. Red blends are usually pretty tasty too, and seem to go well with almost any type of food.

Consider some of these when you’re hosting a wine and cheese party or heading out for a fall picnic.

Tips

Follow my wine serving tips for a complete rundown of what you need to know. It’s a no-nonsense approach for the home hostess.

In general, serve these at around 62 degrees. If you don’t have a wine fridge with a temperature setting for red wine you can put the bottle in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to cool it down from the typical household temperature of around 70 degrees.

Also, I highly advise you to invest in a wine aerator if you’re prone to drinking red wine. It makes such a difference in the taste.

One last note; if you love trying new wines, consider signing up for a wine club or wholesale distribution site. I personally LOVE Wine Insider for their selection, and ability to order half cases or full cases at a discounted price. We’ve never had a bad wine from them!

  1. Yellow Tail Shiraz
  2. Redwood Creek Pinot Noir
  3. Woodbridge Cabernet
  4. Dead Bolt Red Blend
  5. Bogle Petite Syrah
  6. Francis Ford Coppola Cabernet (we also love their Claret)
  7. J. Lohr Pinot Noir (I love their Cabernet Sauvignon, too)
  8. Santa Margherita Chianti
  9. Sterling Pinot Noir

For the purpose of this post I’m not going into detail about tasting notes or flavor profiles. I just wanted to share some of the wines that we enjoy, and think you will too. The fun is all in the tasting anyway, right!
