How To Make A Looped Ribbon Swag

One of the easiest ways to add festive decor to a party setting is with swags, banners, and buntings. The great thing about them is that they create a focal point when you want to highlight an area, or they dress up an otherwise dull spot. Such is the case with this ribbon swag I made for a tea party {styled for Hens and Chicks Parties}. I felt like the tea cart needed an extra “oomph” so I hung the swag across the front.

I put a twist on the classic ribbon swag by creating a LOOPED ribbon swag. I hadn’t seen that done before and I think it turned out rather adorable!

The swag is easy to make:

  • All you need is several rolls of ribbon {the $1 rolls are great for this} in various colors and widths to complement your design.
  • Tie 1 piece of ribbon across 2 points, for your base.
  • Begin at 1 end and tie another piece of ribbon onto the base.
  • Drape it down and tie it again a few inches further. Continue until you reach your desired swag length.
  • Repeat the tying and draping with enough ribbon to create a full look. You can overlap and underlay existing drapes as you move along.
  • Leave some trails of ribbon at each end, and add a clip on flower to finish it off if desired.

Here’s how our finished tea cart looks, and you can see the entire tea party here. I hope you’ll try this new twist on the classic ribbon swag.
