Add Memories to your Holiday Table

Today I want to talk about a small detail on the holiday table that can lead to big fun! When we get together with family for the holiday meals, the conversation inevitably turns to stories and memories of the past.

My husband talks about how he tortured his younger brother, my father-in-law talks about how Chuck {my hubs} tried to be sneaky in some way, and the live-in grandparents always had a funny comment about all of it as they watched from the sidelines.

Inspired by these tales from the past, I thought it would be cool to create a fun tabletop element that puts a twist on these family memories. I decided to make diy conversation ribbons for each place setting.

They’re based on personal history so they’re sure to drum up conversation and laughter.

I love using these on my Thanksgiving entertaining table as well as for eclectic table setting ideas. Here, I spray painted them gold to coordinate with my plates.

To help anchor the ribbons, I used one of my favorite holiday accents – the Lucky Wishbone. You’ll see me using them over and over again on my Thanksgiving tables.

I made the ribbon questions using the Epson ribbon printer and tailored them to our family. Some of mine are:

  • Who tried to pull off the biggest lie to mom & dad? {completely hilarious if you knew my husband and his brother}
  • Who caused the most mischief growing up?
  • What’s the worst thing Chandra ever did. {this is pretty ironic because Chandra is the “perfect” daughter}
  • What’s the funniest quote from Mamaw? Papaw? {Chuck’s grandparent’s lived with them for years and always had something snarky to say}
  • When did you realize Chase had his talent? {he’s an amazing singer}

While these are just some ideas from our family, yours would be personalized to your own family.

Only you know what will initiate the best conversation. My tip is to keep it light-hearted, and funny. As you can see in our case, memories of the “trouble” the boys caused is the source for laughter in the Nease family.

PARTY TIP: You could print these out on paper strips if you don’t have a ribbon printer. Either way they make a cute addition to the table.

I’ve got some fun news to share today. I mentioned earlier that I’ve got a project up my sleeve, and it’s the fact that I’m working with Sister Schubert’s frozen breads, for the holidays. Not only that, but I’m heading down to Alabama next week to spend a couple of days with Sister herself, and four other bloggers. We’re going to be cooking in her kitchen together and talking about holiday entertaining. How cool is that!

Have you tried Sister Schubert’s rolls before? They’re pretty delicious and come in several varieties. Personally I love the convenience of them, and the fresh taste warm from the oven. What’s more, my daughter is the REAL bread lover in the family and she’s given them two thumbs up!

Sharing is caring!

  3. Since I always host our overall family Christmas every year, I am always looking for new and “family” oriented ideas. I love the printable ribbon at each place setting. What a conversation started!!! I had no problem finding the label maker, but the wishbones have been a challenge. Can you please tell me where you found the wishbones and if they are expensive? I have quite a few place settings to buy for but I do love the meaning behind the wishbones. It was always a scuffle at my grandmother’s table to see who would get the wishbone and make a wish from Sunday dinner. Love this idea. Please help! I adore your ideas and follow you on PInterest and your blog. Keep those beautiful tables coming….. Monica

    1. Oh, sorry, I forgot to add the link to the wishbones!
      Of course I spray painted them in the golden color. We love using them!
