12 Unique Home Decor Ideas

I love this time of year, not only because it’s summer and we get to relax our schedules a bit, but because here in Richmond it’s Homearama time! This is where one of the newer neighborhoods dedicates a street to a designer showcase featuring the latest in custom design and decor. It’s a spectacular day of inspiration as it usually includes 7-9 gorgeous homes. You can see some of my favorite ideas from last years house tour, here.

This year I found 12 unique home decor ideas that I thought were exceptional enough to share and inspire you with. The photos aren’t the best quality since I had to use my phone, but you’ll definitely get the picture {haha, pun intended}.

The ideas are actually quite simple and you can DIY many of them, or could hire it out for a minimal handyman fee. I’ll give you my best interpretation of how they’re done too.

Drawer pulls as wall hooks. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Drawer pulls as wall hooks

Such a cute and clever idea using mix-n-match pulls from the hardware store or vintage shops. They add instant charm to an entryway, mud room, laundry room, or bathroom. Just hang them directly into the wall studs or using molly screws.

Faux chain detail on shelves. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Faux chain shelves

Add a decorative touch to open hanging shelves with a chain. The chain looks like it’s holding the shelves together but it’s an illusion since the shelves are individually hung. Recreate the look by spray painting chain from the hardware store {they will cut it to length for you} in a metallic gold color. Use eye hooks to fasten to each shelf and attach the chain to. Careful measuring would need to be done to ensure your shelves are properly hung so the chain is pulled taught.

Stagger vertical shelves for architectural interest. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Staggered vertical shelves

How creative and simple is this idea to stagger inexpensive book shelves on the wall! It creates much more whimsy and interest than regular alignment, and would be great in a bonus room/basement or child’s room.

Dress up your vent return. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Architectural vent covers

This was a beautiful alternative to those ugly grate covers on your air returns. Unless you’re an avid DIY’er with wood working skills, you’d probably need to hire a carpenter to make a custom cover like this. Another caveat: this air system had a central vent system so this cover wasn’t removable. I’m pretty sure that one could be fashioned to be removable though, so you could change out the filters.

Easy ceiling trim detail. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Ceiling trim

Any crafter could easily create this rope trim treatment. While this was done around a coffered ceiling, it could also be applied around crown molding, chair rail molding, or even base boards. The tacks placed at intervals gives it that extra touch too.

Door panel as wall paneling. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Core doors as wall panel

Talk about unique home decor ideas – here’s a brilliant one that I couldn’t get over! At first glance the paneled walls in this powder room look like intricately carved wood. However, when you take a closer look you see that it’s actually core bi-fold door panels fashioned together and trimmed out for a finished, seamless look.

Tray sink. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Chic sink

I have to admit I’m not 100% sure what the deal is with this stunning butler’s pantry sink, but there are definitely some good ideas here. For one, it shows you how you can mix gold-tones and silver-tones together. The handles on the sink surround look beautiful with the faucet. Secondly, I’m not sure if this is an actual sink or if it’s been transformed into one. It looks like it could possibly be an elegant chaffing dish, doesn’t it! Thirdly, trend alert! See the graphic design on the back splash? That type of pattern was seen throughout many of the homes, and apparently is sold in sheets that are easily applied and look seamless when finished. Stunning, right!

Turn an old TV into a doggy bed. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

TV doggy bed

If you love a little bit of whimsy in your decorating, then this tv doggy bed is just what you need! All you have to do is take the guts out of an old console television set, and fashion a back panel for it. Remove the glass front and decorate for man’s best friend. I love how they added little doggy photos to the back wall!

Vertical Lego play set. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Vertical play space

The first of two great ideas for a little boy’s room or play room is this vertically hung Lego play set. Not only is it fun to play with but it acts as art for the wall too. This was made by using a bunch of Lego base squares fastened to the wall to create one big backdrop.

Easy ceiling mural. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Easy diy ceiling mural

In the same Lego themed play room we spy this ceiling mural. You might think it looks very detailed and complicated, but when you break down the steps it’s not difficult at all. Use a large piece of wall paper and cut it out so the edges are jagged and irregular. Apply it to the ceiling and paint around the border using a small brush to give it that “break through” look.

Flower wall decor. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

DIY flower art

When I saw this wall hanging I instantly thought about the diy framed flower art I created last year. It’s essentially the same technique, and I actually like mine better {ahem}. I do like that it’s large in size and fills the entire board though. Cute idea with faux flowers from the $1 store, and would make a great photo backdrop for a party.

Hang shower rod from ceiling for height. These 12 unique home decor ideas are from a recent designer showcase tour.

Ceiling mounted shower rod

My girl friend went crazy for this shower rod idea.  All they did was hang the rod from the ceiling instead of the walls. Besides the fact that it adds a kind of industrial-chic look to the space, it also visually raises the ceiling height. Of course you do have to consider the fact that you would need to get custom shower curtain and liner, but it’s a fabulous look!

I hope you love seeing these unique home decor ideas as much as I did. Going through decorated houses is one of my favorite pastimes! Which idea is your favorite?

  1. I like the look of the door hooks for hangers. That is such a clever idea. I will have to talk to my husband about adding some home decor to our house. I think it is time for a change.

  2. I love the idea of a vertical wall space. That way you don’t have to take up any extra room in your home. Plus, it is original and different from most play room ideas. I think children would love it, and actually enjoy playing with it!

  3. Although I would probably love to have many of these decor items, I definitely loved the mounted shower rod idea the best. However, my reasoning for liking it so much is not because it is visually appealing. It is because shower rods can sometimes fall down and I definitely think that this is a good way of preventing that from happening.
