Bonus Room Decor – Boho-Chic Style

Check out our new bonus room decor where I incorporated the latest trends and accessories for an updated look.

Bohemian-chic updates make this bonus room decor cozy and inviting for the whole family.

Our bonus room decor has gotten a much needed update thanks to my ambassadorship with World Market, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with it! For this sponsored project I was given the challenge to “spruce up my space” and boy did our bonus room decor need a makeover. It’s been sitting there looking very bland ever since we moved into the new house nearly two years ago.

With the bohemian {or boho} look being very on-trend right now I thought it was the perfect direction to take this room. The room is upstairs like most bonus rooms are, and it’s mostly where the kids watch TV, play video games, and hang out with friends. We also watch movies in here together as a family, and since the children are getting older I wanted the space to have a transitional style that didn’t seem too mature or too juvenile. This boho-chic style adds the perfect amount of youthful whimsy and worldly sophistication.

When I think of boho style I think of a throwback to the hippie era + travel & adventure + cozy textiles & earthy details. The room basically began with the sofa, a glass side table, and curtains. By adding some decorative pieces from World Market and pulling items from around the house, I have a whole new look that we all love. In fact, I knew I had done well when my daughter tried to “steal” the double decker table for her room, and my son tried to “steal” the wire animal heads for his!

Bonus Room Decor :: Adding a Cozy Boho-Chic Feel

  • A primary focus of any living room is the seating area. You want it to be cozy and inviting, and adding pillows and throws is a great way to do this.  Since the sofa is a neutral tone, any color added just pops in the room! The 2 new pillows {orange honeycomb & feather embroidery} do that as well as add texture. More color and texture is added with one of my throws casually tossed over the ottoman section.
  • As I’ve said before, a room always looks more complete when you add curtains and rugs. I’m in love with this woven kilim rug from India, with it’s braided tassels and fringe accents, and the colors help to set the tone for the rest of the accent pieces.
  • Because this isn’t our main living area we don’t need a ton of seating. In fact I needed pieces that are easy to move around because the sofa is actually a pull out bed as well. Adding two poufs was a fabulous solution and seem to be my kids favorite furniture pieces to sit {or lay} on. They can also be used as foot props on the other side of the sofa {without the ottoman section}.
  • I’ve been on the look out for a side table for this couch for about a year and a half, and there’s always something not quite right about what I’ve found. When I came across the multi-level accent table with it’s fusion of boho style and mid-century modern style, I knew I had found the perfect solution for the space. It’s the exact size and height that I needed and it allows room for the floor lamp behind it.

  • On the far end of the sofa I have a glass top table that’s been with us forever. I accessorized it with a geometric terrarium and added an air plant inside. This is one of the hottest trends going right now and I love that I can use it on tablescapes when entertaining, if I want.

TIP: The terrarium comes in a gray metal but I wanted it to be gold. Since spray painting isn’t an option for all these intricate seams, I used a gold sharpie pen to “paint” it. It was such an easy solution and it looks great!

Bonus Room Decor :: Adding Decorative Accents

  • When shopping for my new look one of the first things I saw in the store was the collection of wire animal head forms. I was completely drawn to them and it inspired the entire bookshelf display. In fact, it inspired me to bring this bookcase out of my daughter’s room and into this one {oops! need to replace her’s now!}. I didn’t just want one bust form though; I knew they would look much cooler in a grouping so I chose the rhino and the antelope and staggered them on the wall. Love, love, love them!
  • I added decorative accessories to the bookcase, that included books, a rustic wooden box, globes, mini suitcase, and other items that have an earthy and/or traveled feel.

TIP: I used the glass hanging candle holder as another ‘terrarium’ and placed it on it’s side. Just goes to show that you don’t always have to use items in the exact way they were intended.

  2. Those animal heads are fun and quirky….love your style!

  3. You knocked it out of the park Chris! Love all the touches, but I need those animal heads. Beautiful!!

    1. Yes, Bird, I’ve been seeing them all over the place and love how they look modern but add that organic touch.

  4. I love the space Chris!! This gives me a LOT of ideas for our finished basement. We also moved to our house 2 years ago, and the basement is the one place I’ve done nothing with. I LOVE World Market, there is one near our dog groomer, so it’s a must stop for me every month when we go 😉

    1. Cheryl, I love WM too – wish I could redecorate for every season! LOL
We also have a basement to (hopefully) be finished in the next year or so. The fun thing about a basement is that you can do almost anything with it – doesn’t necessarily have to “match” the rest of the house. We have enough “living” rooms upstairs so would love to make it a fun family entertaining space….with a bar for adults of course 😉
