Vintage Toy Baby Shower

I’m excited to finally share the details of the Operation Shower I helped with in April in Camp LeJeune, NC.   This organization just keeps getting better and better thanks to generous donations and sponsorships, and Amy’s amazing vision for each theme & design.  This was a special event as the first lady herself, Michelle Obama, and Dr. Biden came and gave a pep talk to all the guests, as well as brought a truck load of gifts from the White House.  Once they gave their words of encouragement and thanks, they greeted each mom to be and took photos.

Another great surprise for everyone was the appearance by Martha Stewart.  Yes, Martha came and gave a scrapbooking demonstration, took some questions, and had a fantastic gift bag for each mom to take home, containing the latest scrapbook supplies.  Martha even filmed segments for her recent Mother’s Day show.

Now for the decorative details:  The theme of the shower was a “Vintage Toy” theme and the Hostess with the Mostess, Jenn, created all the graphic designs and printables for the event.  She even flew in all the way from San Diego to help out!  There were several round tables for mom’s and their guests plus a couple of long tables for “extras.”  Three different but coordinating centerpieces were used on the tables (so they don’t all look the same) while custom printed fabric runners (to match Jenn’s paper items) from Spoonflower lay atop each one.  A personalize place card with each mother’s name was also set – Amy’s attention to detail is unparalleled!
The buffet area was eye-catching as it was backed by a drape system with coordinating striped panels and a ton of hanging paper rosettes.  Marie of Sweets Indeed provided sweet skewers and the cutest fabric wrapped favor boxes filled with candy.  Allyson Jane sent her wonderful cookies decorated with the Operation Shower logo, and the blue & red popcorn bags were sent in by Just Pop In – the popcorn is actually flavored!

I think it’s safe to say that the cake that was brought in by Sugarland bakery in Chapel Hill was the best cake I’ve EVER had!  Not to mention the wagon design was incredible and all of the “toys” inside were edible.  The cake had two sides, a chocolate side and a white side with the white being my absolute favorite.  It was layers of cake, with creamy filling, strawberries, and a cookie crust layer.  I drool just thinking about it now!  The “toys” were rice krispies treats covered in fondant.

Of course the real reason for the shower is to provide support and gifts to all the moms-to-be who’s husbands are deployed.  The “Shower In A Box” is packed full with much needed items for baby and mom, and Pottery Barn Kids gave every mother a brand new crib!  The mother’s are truly overwhelmed as they come in thinking they will leave with just a small goodie bag, but leave with so much more!

I have to say working with Amy on these events, and meeting Jenn this time around is more like play than work.  To see more about Amy’s work with Operation Shower, check out the latest issue of Baby Lifestyles e-magazine here (page 47).  I actually included some remarks for the article myself  ; D
