5 Fabulous Desserts to Try Now

5 dessert recipes to make now

I’m sharing some fabulous dessert recipes today, from 4 new friends, but first there’s so much to tell you about my trip last week to visit THE Sister Schubert – yes, she is a real person and that’s her “real” name….kind of. Her given name is Patricia but when her younger sister couldn’t say it at an early age, mom said, “just call her Sister” and it stuck! It stuck so much even teachers in school were calling her Sister and it’s never changed.

That’s just one of the inside stories we learned as I, and 4 other prominent food bloggers ventured to Andalusia, Alabama to cook and visit with Sister Schubert. We’re ambassadors for the brand and couldn’t be more honored to be a part of it. Sister is the perfect Southern hostess full of grace and charm.

bloggers for Sister Schubert's

As blogger trips go, this one was top notch! The five of us {bloggers} stayed in our own private lodge – the Hickory Ridge Lodge – and had a traditional Southern breakfast prepared for us by the owners. Everything about the lodge was rustic and woodsy. All I could think about was how much my husband and kids would have LOVED the place.

On Wednesday night we were escorted over to Sister’s house – yes, her actual HOME, where she lives with her husband, George, their youngest son, and a menagerie of cute dogs and cats. She served us delicious hor d’oeuvres, fantastic wine, and a fabulous dinner and dessert. For dinner she made us recipes from her cookbook, but for dessert she did the most thoughtful thing that blew us all away! She chose a recipe from each of our blogs and made mini versions of them for us! We couldn’t believe it! Talk about hostess with the mostess! I’ll be sharing links to each dessert at the bottom of the post. That way you can also get to know the other lovely ladies I spent those 2 days with.

Thursday was a big day. After our breakfast we went back to Sister’s house to prepare a Thanksgiving feast with her. She showed us how to make her famous Parker House Rolls and we each made our own tin of them. We also learned the story of how her business began. It all started with a church frozen food bazaar. She decided she’d make the dinner rolls that her grandmother had taught her as a little girl, and that was the first time she realized she could freeze them for later use. The rolls sold out and the following year she had 200 orders for more. After that she realized she had a good thing going and the rest, as they say, is history. And that is still the same recipe that’s sold in stores today.

The rest of our feast consisted of turkey, sweet potato pie {a side dish, not a dessert}, dressing, butternut squash bake with pesto {amazing! – I’m still craving it!}, cranberry congealed salad with sour cream topping {George’s mother’s recipe}, and bread pudding made with Sister Schubert’s cinnamon rolls as the base. We each took turns helping Sister prepare a dish. Mine was helping out with the congealed salad and topping. The recipes are available in Sister’s current cookbook and her upcoming cookbook out soon.

Speaking of her cookbooks, the proceeds from them go to her home for orphaned and abandoned children, as well as other charities. She has a huge heart and is very humble for someone with such success. She’s truly inspiring in many ways.

Family is important to her and I love one of the stories she told us about when she was a little girl. They went to her grandmother’s house for dinner and she had set the table with all of her finest accouterments. Sister said, “you don’t have to go to all that trouble – it’s just family.” to which grandmother stopped right in her tracks and replied: “I can have no finer company than my family”.

Did you know that the rolls used for Chick-fil-A chick-n-minis are Sister Schubert’s rolls? Also, one of the large chain restaurant’s uses Sister Schubert’s for their sliders rolls.

We also learned that one of Sister’s favorite hobbies is needlepoint. She’s even got a NeedleQuote site where you can create your own digital needlepoint with your favorite quote, an inspirational verse, or anything else you like. Just input your text, save it, and print out your work. Or you can use it to send a digital greeting online. If you make one you’ll also get a $1 off coupon towards your next purchase of Sister Schubert’s.

tis the season

I like the idea of adding quotes that are specific to family members, similar to my conversation ribbons I shared earlier. You could print them out and use them as place cards at the table, or use them as gift tags at Christmas.

Now to end this marathon post {really I could go on and on about it} I hope you’ll check out these 5 dessert recipes that we enjoyed in mini versions on Wednesday night. You’re welcome!
