Help Me Decide! :: Living Room Decor

living room decor options
Hey guys, today I’d love to get some feedback on my living room decorating project. We’ve been in the new house almost a month and I swear I thought I’d be completely decorated by now! Hahaha!

Actually, the first project I’m concentrating on is the living room, because that’s the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I don’t want it to be formal and untouchable, but more hip and cool, and a place where I, and a couple of girl friends, can sit and chat with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. No sofa either – we already have 2 “sofa rooms” {the family room & the bonus room/loft}, and I’ve always loved the idea of a conversation area with individual chairs as opposed to sitting side by side on a couch.

Here’s a reminder of the layout of the room, below: small, 2 windows {1 double, 1 single}, ‘walls’ are open on 2 sides.

Here are my 2 directions below – remember the walls are light tan, and floors are a chocolate brown {not quite as dark as what’s in the style boards, but close}. The basic furniture pieces are what I’m leaning towards, but color is up for debate, as well as rug and curtain choices.

Living Room #1:

  • Medium toned shag rug
  • Tan chairs
  • Patterned curtains

Living Room #2

  • Light toned Patterned rug.
  • Gray chairs
  • Solid curtains.

UPDATE:   I’ve purchased the rug and mustard chair below {plus, just bought a mirror front cabinet}.  Still waffling back & forth on the tan vs. gray chairs.  And I think a light gray curtain may work best {as shown} either way.  Thoughts?

There it is. Not a big difference on paper, but a big difference in how it all looks together. PLEASE COMMENT WITH YOUR FAVORITE, and help me out! If you’re interested in the items, you can see sources here.

PIN this post for later.

I would prefer the first one. Which is really easy to do also.

I love number 2. I like the simple curtains and the color of the chairs. It looks fantastic.

    Hi Chris,

I love your both of your choices but personally I prefer #2.

    Good luck …

Definitely #2. It’s chic, comfortable, current… and timeless. I like that the dark gray chairs bring some high contrast into the space when coupled with the lighter curtains and rug. The accessories and yellow chair really pop in that arrangement, where to me #1 feels a little muddy. Would you consider a tone-on-tone, very small scale chevron curtain (thin lines) in #2 to bring the two together?

Katie, I would certainly consider a tone on tone pattern for the curtains. My biggest dilemma has been finding a “quality” design in 96″ length. Everything cute I’ve seen is either sheer or 84″. So frustrating.

I like #2. I really like the rug in 2. Good luck! Love that you aren’t having a sofa.

Mmm this is a hard one – but i’m going for option 1. It feels more pleasing to the eye and just feels more homely.

I think I like #1 as well. I wasn’t too fond of the shag rug, but I didn’t really like the gray chairs either. I love the accent colors you have chosen and the chevron curtains look great!

Oooh that’s tough!! I think I’m going to go with #1 being my favorite though. Love the patterned curtains.
