DIY Lollipop Bats For Halloween

It’s October 1 and I can’t avoid the Halloween rush anymore. I sort of hate rushing the holidays and one of the things I always loved about blogging is that you don’t have to think as far ahead as printed publications. That’s changed now as I’ve been seeing Halloween, even Christmas ideas popping up all over the web and Pinterest, for at least a month. I’m finally sharing some Halloween ideas this week and to start things off is one of our new sponsors, Katarina’s Paperie. I am so excited to share this new Halloween craft with you. One of my favorite Halloween moments when growing up was making ghost lollipops at school. We usually created them the week of Halloween before we got completely high with sugar and didn’t settle down until the new year. You could make them many different ways, but my teachers used the simple approach. Wrap a lollipop in a white tissue, tie with a string and use a marker to add some eyes.

I wanted to reinvent this classic Halloween kid project this year. I find bats almost spookier than ghosts (probably because you can see them more easily), so I decided to transform the classic Tootsie pop into a spooky flying bat. With a little fabric, ribbon and glow in the dark paint, you can have a fun favor to send your trick or treaters away with on Halloween night.

Makes 6 Lollipop Bats You Will Need:

• Black cotton fabric
• Black and White Ribbon
• Large lollipops (Classics include Blow Pops and Tootsie Pops)
• Glow in the Dark puffy paint
• Bat Wings Template {free download}
• Black Card stock
• Tacky Glue
• Scissors
• Pinking Shears

Print out the bat wings template. Cut out one set of bat wings.

Trace each set of bat wings onto heavy black card stock. Cut out the bat wings from the card stock.

Measure out a 6 by 6 inch piece of black cotton fabric. Cut out the fabric square with pinking shears.

Place the lollipop in the center of the fabric square. Gather the fabric together at the base of the lollipop. Measure and cut two 12 inch lengths of ribbon.

Tie the gathered fabric together with the ribbon and make a bow.

Add tacky glue to the center of the card stock wings. Glue onto the back of the lollipop.

Cut out two small triangles with a rectangular tab bottom from the black card stock to use as ears.

Fold up the rectangle and add a drop of glue. Attach the ears to the top of the bat lollipop.

Use the glow in the dark puffy paint to make two beady eyes on the front of the lollipop. Let dry.

Your bat is now ready to fly away with your trick or treaters on Halloween night! Make a whole flock and hang from branches at an entryway. It makes a festive decoration and guests can grab one on their way out. Or choose a dark place so that the bats beady eyes glow for a wonderful Halloween touch. You can also craft a festive tag and send to school with your little trick or treater as fun treat to hand out.
