Easy Painted Napkin Rings {guest blogger}

by Melissa Bahen

I have always loved going to the hardware store. I love the smell of the lumber, the neatly organized rows of supplies, and the endless world of creative potential housed in its walls. You wouldn’t necessarily think of the hardware store as a great place to stock up on inexpensive craft supplies, but there are so many chic, glamorous things you can make with the humble items from its aisles.

These easy DIY napkin rings are made from $0.42 PVC couplings. With a little gold spray paint, some mod podge, and gold glitter, they make an quick, inexpensive addition to even the fanciest tablescape. And you can use any color of spray paint and glitter to match any party color scheme!

Materials:

  • 1″ PVC couplings*
  • metallic gold spray paint
  • blue painters’ tape
  • mod podge
  • sponge brush
  • gold glitter

*Note that these are called 1″ couplings because that’s what size of PVC pipe they attach to, not because they are 1″ long or wide. They are actually about 2 1/2″ long, and 1 1/2 ” wide.

Directions:

  1. Lay the PVC couplings out on a flat surface covered with newspaper or a garbage bag. Spray all surfaces with spray paint and allow to dry.
  2. When the spray paint is completely dry, use the painters’ tape to tape off the edges of the napkin rings, leaving a strip in the middle exposed.
  3. Use the sponge brush to apply a generous layer of mod podge to the exposed strip of napkin ring. Immediately sprinkle glitter over the mod podge. Set the napkin rings on their ends to dry.
  4. When the first layer of mod podge is dry, gently tap the napkin rings on a table or counter top to shake off any loose glitter, then apply another coat of mod podge to seal in the glitter.
  5. Remove the painters’ tape, set the napkin rings on their ends, and allow to dry completely before using, ideally overnight.

*When you set your table, make sure the writing on the bottom of your new napkin rings is facing AWAY from your guests!

The most important thing about parties & entertaining is the guest list! Next, it should be delicious, beautiful, unique, and fun. Calling on my years of experience, I’ll show you how to pull it all together with style. Cheers!
