Enjoy a Date Night In with a happy hour and gelato tasting. Start your evening off with salty snacks and cocktails, and then end it with delicious creamy gelato in several flavors for “tasting.”
When it comes to the end of the week, the husband and I like to relax and keep things low key for date night. Throughout the month he’s busy with guys night one week, I’ll have ladies night the next week, and it seems we’re running the kids somewhere another week. We usually get one good Friday night that we can just connect and enjoy each other for an at-home date.
The typical scenario is appetizers and wine, and if we’re feeling really indulgent we’ll include dessert. One of the things we did recently was include a gelato tasting, and I can’t tell you how awesome it was! I brought home four new gelato flavors so we could taste each one, compare notes, and pick our favorite.
Date Night In
We started off with an afternoon happy hour that included charcuterie, cheeses, and bread, steamed crisp asparagus, and sparkling wine. This is the kind of spread we enjoy for a casual date, and it’s easy to sit on the couch comfortably instead of at the dinner table.
I also included a fig almond spread that complements the goat cheese and Gorgonzola we had. Just spread one of the cheeses on the french bread and top with a dollop of fig spread.
Jazz is usually our music of choice when we do this type of date, but with the sun setting late in the day now, the Top 40 beats felt more on par with the day.

After the salty items, the fun begins with the gelato tasting! The Breyers Gelato Indulgence flavors included:
- Vanilla Caramel – vanilla gelato with caramel swirls and caramel curls on top
- Raspberry Cheesecake – cheesecake gelato with raspberry swirls and graham cracker bites on top
- Tiramisu – mascarpone gelato with espresso sauce, lady fingers near the bottom, and cocoa sprinkled on top
- Triple Chocolate – half milk chocolate and half dark chocolate with white chocolate sauce swirled in, and chocolate curls on top
I placed 2 small scoops of each flavor into bowls and we took turns tasting. My husband loved the tiramisu, while I was stuck between the vanilla caramel and the triple chocolate. I think I finally narrowed it down to the dark chocolate side of the triple chocolate! 😉
Of course we had plenty left over to share with the kids later and guests over the weekend. Everyone had a different pick – our guest loved the raspberry cheesecake best.
This was a fun and unique way to add dessert to our date night menu and it kept us from feeling too full too. Gelato is the Italian version of ice cream and it’s a bit smoother and creamier in texture.
How do you spend date night in with your significant other? I’d love to hear your ideas.
