Start with a tiered cake stand. You probably already have one, or you can easily craft one by stacking a plate on a base.

Christmas is the best time of year to create table decorations with things other than flowers. Here are some of the best ideas for making your own inexpensive centerpiece.

Tiered Christmas centerpiece

Designing a tiered centerpiece gives your table height and is great for round tables, buffet tables, or long tables. In fact you could add two to a long table in order to have one on each end.

You can purchase tiered stands made of galvanized metal, or wire baskets. But you can easily make your own using cake stands or stacking plates and bowls.

PARTY TIP: Turn a bowl upside down, or use a large cylinder vase as a base. Add adhesive dots to adhere a plate on top to create a DIY tiered stand.

Using a tiered stand allows you to combine elements for a unique Christmas arrangement. Place a small bouquet of flowers on the top tier, and add ornaments or candles on the bottom tier.

You can also create a candelabra effect by filling the cake stand levels with candles. Use pillar candles and tea lights to create an elegant all white centerpiece.

You can also use a single cake stand to place diy candy cone Christmas trees. These are adorable for a kids Christmas table or party.

Make the trees using Styrofoam cones from the craft store and adhering peppermints, gumdrops, or marshmallows.

Use fruit

Create a gorgeous nature inspired centerpiece with orange pomanders and fresh evergreens. Use a small tray or bowl to build it on. Cut out different designs in the skin of the orange using a citrus peeler, and then add in some whole cloves.

Tuck in Christmas tree clippings, cypress clippings, or magnolia leaves. Add some cinnamon sticks for a finishing touch.

This idea looks beautiful on a natural Christmas tablescape design.

PRO TIP: Pomanders are traditionally make with oranges, but you can add more color by using some lemons and limes too.

Tuck in some greenery

Make a greenery runner down the center of the table like I did for this Christmas dinner party. Use evergreen clippings from your own back yard, your Christmas tree, or common area. Add eucalyptus for more texture and a silvery tint.

Add flower heads tucked in small water vessels, pinecones, candles, or ribbon for an accent.

Use presents

Displaying tiny wrapped gifts also makes a pretty presentation. Great way to hold party favors too! Get creative with the wrapping to make it more interesting.

You can add tiny presents in matching or similar wrapping paper, or make them bright and fun by picking a theme.

Why not try bright pinks, greens, and blues or shades of red, green, and gold? Make your centerpiece more modern with black and red or black and white.

Pink and gold and silver Christmas ornaments used as table centerpiece

Christmas ornaments

Add pretty ornaments in modern color combinations like this white & pink Christmas tablescape, or use vintage ornaments in soft hues.

This is a terrific solution for a cheap Christmas centerpiece. Mini ornaments combined with larger ones make for plenty of visual interest.

Use a wire or metal stand from the home goods store. They’re great because they have an edge that holds the decoration in place.

Keep it simple

For the easiest centerpiece of all, just add greenery from the Christmas tree trimmings, and pinecones from the yard for a natural look.

  • Use your tiered centerpiece for a Christmas party or dinner party.
  • Set it at one end of a Christmas buffet table, or place it in the center with food and drink on each side.
  • Use silver, gold, and black ornaments for a New Years centerpiece.
