The Homestead Signature Doughnut Recipe

homemade doughnuts recipe

We just got back from our family vacation to The Homestead resort, and now I’m packing up to go to the BHG headquarters for the Live Better Workshop I told you about here. This is such an exciting opportunity, I hope you’ll follow me on Instagram to see all the behind the scenes activities! I’ve got a lot to do today to get ready to leave, but since I’m so inspired by my trip to the Homestead, I thought I’d share some snapshots of our vacation, plus their signature recipe for homemade doughnuts!

While everyone else heads East to go to the beach in the summer, we prefer to head West, away from the crowds, and stay at Virginia’s Homestead resort. We’ve been going there for about 3 years now and each time just gets better. They’re very family oriented with 2 large water slides, a lazy river pool, a regular pool {outdoor & indoor}, and a kiddie pool. There’s also a putt putt course, lawn games, a family game room, and tea time is held every afternoon from 3 to 4, with a s’mores fire pit each evening outside!

Now that our kids are a little older we can also get away for some grown up time in the lounge or bar, and have a cocktail. We enjoy the fine dining they offer and feel it’s a great way to teach the children how to act “properly” in a more upscale environment.

One of the things we always look forward to {especially my daughter} is the homemade doughnuts they make every day. They serve them glazed and with cinnamon sugar, and they are amazing! I thought it would be fun to share the recipe with you guys here. FYI, I also got inspired by a couple more menu items I had there, and will make and post those soon. Until then, I hope you enjoy the photos taken with my phone and the recipe below.

The Homestead Signature Doughnuts

  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk

Glaze:

  • Powdered sugar
  •  water
  • Real Maple or Hickory syrup

Combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt together in a medium size bowl.

Using a mixer with paddle attachment, cream together butter and sugar on low speed until fluffy.

Add eggs one at a time, stopping to scrape down the sides after each one if necessary.

Add milk and dry ingredients slowly and continue to mix until well combined. Refrigerate dough for 2 hours.

After dough sets, roll it onto a floured surface and cut into circles, and cut out a hole using graduated biscuit cutters.

Heat oil to 375 degrees and fry doughnuts until golden brown on each side. Remove and drain by placing on paper towels.

In a separate bowl, combine 2 parts powdered sugar and 1 part water; add syrup to taste. Drizzle over doughnuts.
