Summer Cookbook Review :: 4 Books for your Shelf

I know many people belong to book clubs and love reading a good novel, but my book of choice has always been cookbooks, especially when they have accompanying photos of the dishes. I’ve been collecting some over the past couple of months and want to share some reviews with you.

As good as the internet is for finding recipes, I still love a good cookbook that I can set up {without re-touching the screen every few minutes to refresh}, bookmark, and write notes in. I’ve got 4 cookbooks to talk about today ranging from main dish meals, to cocktails, to dessert.

  1. Patio Pizzeria – This book covers everything you need to know to make delicious artisan style pizzas at home, in particularly, on the grill. It includes recipes for different types of pizza dough as well as gourmet toppings, bruscheta, sandwiches & paninis, focaccia, and accompanying salads. After looking through Patio Pizzeria I was inspired to make this pesto, artichoke, sundried tomato pizza on flatbread {it was fantastic}. This book has lots of photos and even if you aren’t in to making your own dough, the toppings suggestions are worth a look. Some of my personal faves are chicken sausage & caramelized onion pizza, and honeyed goat cheese & apricot panini.
  2. Beach House Baking – With a name like that how can you go wrong? Beach House Baking contains a plethora of recipes from savory to sweet, like aged cheddar, bacon, and scallion biscuits to mini tiramisu icebox cakes to berry burst pie. It covers pie crust techniques, cookies, drinks, candies, cakes…. as well as a picture to go with every recipe. If you’re a baker or have a sweet tooth, this is a good one to add to your collection.
  3. Cookie Doughlicious – I just love the concept of this cookbook. You know how we aren’t “allowed” to eat raw cookie dough because of the eggs in the batter? This book gives you 20 egg-free cookie dough recipes that you can either cook as cookies, OR use the dough in one of 50 other creations like sugar cookie dough truffles, chocolate hazelnut cookie dough tarts, or pumpkin cookie dough ice cream. This really is an interesting cookbook with a unique twist. I only wish there were more pictures. There are a lot, but not one for every recipe. If you love modern cooking and like to try new things, you’ll want to have this book on your shelf.
  4. Cocktails for Book Lovers – If you belong to a book club, or know of an avid reader, this is a great book to have or give as a gift. The idea is so fun – there are 50 recipes inspired by famous authors and/or the popular drinks of their era. For instance, the book Ulysses by James Joyce inspired the Ruddy Mary cocktail recipe. Joyce’s characters are known to over-imbibe, and bloody Mary’s are usually the “hair of the dog” remedy. Therefore this Ruddy Mary {made with gin instead of vodka} is the inspired cocktail.  Another example is the Corpse Reviver  recipe inspired by Olivia Howard Dunbar’s important contribution to the tradition of ghost stories. This is really a fun book to have on your bar cart, and there are photos of each drink recipe.
