Halloween Dinner Party Ideas

Happy October, friends! It’s time to think about celebrating Halloween, even if you don’t have kids who are trick-or-treating age. One way to do that is to host a black themed Halloween party for adults.

I’ve created a chic black tablescape to inspire you to have fun with this classic children’s holiday. While I still love a grown up costume party, I also enjoy a more intimate gathering of friends over a delicious meal.

Create the easy menu below, and serve up some tasty Halloween cocktails.

Black Halloween Tablescape

Get maximum impact with minimum effort by setting the table in all black. Use a black tablecloth and black spooky fabric as a foundation. If you don’t have a black tablecloth, a black sheet will work just fine.

Use black dishes to create a monochromatic table. This matte black set serves 8 and is super stylish.

This table gave me a great excuse to buy some new tabletop items like black wine glasses, and this set of black flatware. I love how modern and stylized this set is! And the black will coordinate with SO MANY other colors and holidays.

PARTY TIP: Invite guests to dress in costume or have them wear all black to match the party theme.

Halloween table setting ideas

To give the table the “creepy” factor use small decorative skeletons and skulls at each place setting. It adds just the right amount of “spook” to this adult dinner party.

Guests can take home a simple party favor that doubles as a place card holder. Fill large test tubes with black M&M’s and attach a name card to it.

Sophisticated Halloween dinner party

Rather than using flowers in a centerpiece, filled small vases with seeded eucalyptus. It just seems more Halloween-appropriate, plus it allows the food to be the focal point.

Halloween Menu

I have to say, the black background of this table certainly makes the food pop! The meal is purposely coordinated to the party with earthy colors and delicious flavors.

Welcome guests as soon as they arrive, with a black widow martini or a batch of green Halloween punch. Bonus points if you add dry ice to make is “smoky.”

Halloween charcuterie board

Speaking of food, this is a great time to put together a gorgeous cheese & charcuterie board. In this case it becomes an integral part of the meal rather than an appetizer.

Another great addition to the meal is this Halloween spinach dip in coffin bread bowl. So festive and delicious.

Serve it with a main course of black pasta and slow cooker beef tips.

Round things out with a butternut squash baby kale salad.

Chocolate desserts in a jar for Halloween party

For dessert make these chocolate lava cakes in a jar, and dress them for Halloween by adding a spider ring on top. Or you can serve these Halloween dirt pudding cups.

Or, add some of these witch finger cookies in a cellophane bag or small pail, at each guest’s place setting.

Serve a dry red wine like a Bordeaux, Cabernet or Merlot, to complement the meat and the chocolate dessert.

  3. Where did you find the mini skeletons and skulls? Everything is spooktacular! It really is the most beautiful halloween themed party I’ve seen.

    1. Thank you so much, Kathy! The skeletons/skulls were in my storage but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the skeletons at Walmart. Mine came in garland form and I deconstructed it to use them individually. Something similar should be available almost anywhere this time of year (craft stores, home stores, Spirit Halloween stores, etc). Good luck!

  4. You nailed the Halloween theme — everything was thought out perfectly! Thanks so much for sharing.
