How to Make a Cityscape Backdrop

DIY Cityscape Backdrop for Superman party #diy #supermanparty

For any Superman {or Super Hero} themed party you can enhance the decor with this easy DIY cityscape backdrop, as seen in my 5 ideas for a fun Superman party. The tutorial is rather simple but you do need a steady hand to cut out the shapes.

Once you make the backdrop you can prop it up behind a dessert table or favor table. You can even make two and place them side by side for a larger impact.

DIY City Backdrop

Supplies:

  • Large black foam core board from a craft store
  • Light colored marker {silver, white, gold}
  • Ruler
  • Exacto knife
  • Scrap cardboard to cut on

Draw “buildings” on the backside of the foam core using the ruler to guide straight lines. The light marker will show up against the black board.

Place the foam core on top of a large piece of cardboard, on a hard steady surface – I did this on the garage floor. The cardboard will act as a barrier so the exacto knife doesn’t damage your surface.

Using the knife, cut out the shapes following your marker lines. Use the ruler as a cutting guide if you need to.

Use the opposite side {that hasn’t been drawn on} as your city scene and prop it against a wall.

You can take this project a step further if you like, by cutting out small white or yellow paper rectangles and attaching them as “windows” to your buildings. Just use double sided tape to hold them in place.

  1. De javu, Chris: I was thinking what kind of backdrop I am to create for my son’s bicycle party and along comes your email!!!!. Of course cutting out a bicycle is harder I guess than straightforward buildings. Thank you for the idea nevertheless.

    1. That’s cool, Candice! You can always cut the backdrop into houses, like you’re riding through the neighborhood! 😉
