Craft It Forward With DIY Gift Packaging

craft it forward with Michael's stores

Did you guys know this week is “Random Acts of Kindness Week“? The idea of performing random acts of kindness has been gaining popularity in the past few years, and with the tragedy in Connecticut over the holidays I think it’s motivated people even more, to reach out and help a stranger.

I was thrilled when Michael’s stores reached out to me to help them spread the word about how we can “Craft it Forward” too. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money to touch someone’s heart or make their day a little brighter. I decided to use a few of their newest seasonal crafting/scrapbooking supplies to dress up some simple ideas that help spread some cheer.

diy candy packets

  • Teachers are used to getting treats during holidays, but why not send in a sweet treat “just because.” If it’s unexpected and random it’s likely to have more of an impact. Also, include a heartfelt note that really lets her/him know they’re appreciated. Here, I put square chocolates in these cute, tiny ‘file folders’ – they fit perfectly – and tied it with bakers twine and finished with an adhesive paper flower.

DIY gift card pouches

  • I love the idea of randomly paying for something for a complete stranger. You can pay for the next person in line {lunch or coffee}, pay off someone’s layaway, or give them an inexpensive gift card. It’s not the amount of money you spend that’s important here, it’s the fact the you’re doing something thoughtful and kind for someone you don’t even know. Here I put gift cards in pretty holders: a chevron bag that I attached a chalkboard label to, and kraft paper pocket that I attached a fabric flower to.

DIY envelope for notes to friends

  • In this crazy world of electronics it’s very rare that you get a hand written letter anymore. In fact, the last time I wrote a letter to my grandmother she asked me if anything was wrong!! LOL The art of letter writing may be lost but the thought of receiving one is still a bit of a thrill. Write a note to a friend you haven’t talked to or seen in a while, or to an elderly friend or relative. I guarantee it will make their day. Dress up the letter by putting it into a brightly colored envelope and decorating the outside with pretty craft tape.

add tags to stuffed animal gifts

  • I think one of the things that breaks everyone’s hearts is the thought of children being in stressful life situations, or in the hospital for long term care. The smallest things can help brighten their day. Collect stuffed animals and take them to your local children’s hospital or to a local organization that helps displaced kids. You never know – it may be the only ‘friend’ they have. Tie on a crafted tag and include a thoughtful or motivational note.

These are just a few ideas for paying it forward – there are so many more!  Michael’s would love to see/hear how you plan to share a Random Act of Kindness.

  • You can tweet @michaelsstores with hashtag #RAOKDIY to let them know.
  • Share a photo on Instagram with hashtag #RAOKDIY
  • Follow their Pinterest board for lots more ideas on Crafting it Forward.

Oh, and Michael’s will also be celebrating this week by giving away $100,000 worth of gift cards in their US & Canada stores on Sunday, February 17!  Gift card recipients will be encouraged to “craft it forward” and exhibit their own random act of kindness towards another person.

Have a great day!

LOVE this idea! I adore the mini file folders. Too bad Michaels is two hours away! But I actually have been trying to do some random acts this week, too! Guess I am not the only one to have the idea! Thanks for sharing your cute brilliance!

Awe, bummer about the location, Tami. I applaud you for showing acts of kindness though. Thanks – I’m sure you are making people smile.

These are some great ideas, and really sweet too! Seriously thinking about donating some toys to the children’s ward at my local hospital now. Need to go back to my parent’s house and find my stuffed animals.

Cute ideas, Chris! I love all of the ideas, but the idea of giving a gift card to a stranger with a cute message or quote attached really struck me – haven’t seen that before. That would seriously get someone thinking… in a good way! 😉
