Trend Alert :: Churros

trend_churros

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend, and start to summer. We had out-of-town guests and spent the entire time going to the pool, eating, drinking, and laughing about old times. I can’t tell you how important my old friends are to me, especially as I get older and find that it’s more difficult to make meaningful connections {anyone else notice this after the age of 35?}.

As I hit the desk this morning I found myself completely blank on what to blog about since I pretty much shut down on Friday and didn’t give it any thought over the long holiday weekend. But there is a trend I’ve been meaning to talk about so that’s what I decided to post about today – the latest trend being Churros!

I’m not sure why or how churros have become so popular recently, but as a trend it probably originated in California or Texas. This sweet treat has been a staple on Mexican dessert menus for as long as I can remember, and the taste is comparable to donuts. They’re traditionally shaped long and thin; they’re soft on the inside, and crisp and cinnamon-y on the outside. Now they’ve become popular at weddings and events served as a fun novelty item.

Here are 12 examples of churro ideas that I love. There’s a range of recipes and serving suggestions, as well as some twists on the churro idea.

churro recipes

  • Churros seem to be rather easy to make and some recipes call for frying while others are baked for a “healthier” alternative. They are most often served with chocolate dipping sauce for a little added decadence, although there are other ideas as well {see below}.
  • When forming the dough, you can make them long, short, or curl them around in to a circle.

churro bar

  • A Churro Bar is a fantastic idea for celebrations big or small. If I were going to do this I would purchase them from a local resaurant and offer up a variety of dipping sauces – similar to an ice cream bar. Some good suggestions are chocolate sauce, maple syrup, caramel sauce, raspberry sauce, or white chocolate dipping sauce.
  • Use paper cones to hold the churros, or cut them into bite sizes and skewer them. Place them in a shot glass with dipping sauce for easy serving.

churros inspired

  • I love it when flavors and ideas are fused together to create something new. Here are some examples of churro cheesecake bars {YUM!}, small bite poppers, donuts, and waffles.
  • The cinnamon sugar coating on churros makes them a great choice for dessert, late night snacking, OR brunch.
