Greek Burgers with Tzatziki Sauce

greek burgers with tzatziki sauce

When I was at college in Greenville, NC {ECU} there was a local Greek restaurant called Marathon.  It wasn’t fancy but it opened my eyes and mouth to the flavors of the Mediterranean, mainly gyros, souvlaki, and the amazing cucumber sauce known as tzatziki.  I’ve been a fan of Greek dishes ever since and love to recreate them at home.

I’ve already shared design ideas for a Greek themed dinner party and these Greek lamb burgers with tzatziki sauce is the perfect main dish to serve.  It’s a simplified version inspired by the gyro, using ground lamb instead of strips of meat. These also make a delicious weeknight meal for the family when you want something more than a basic burger. In my opinion though, the cucumber sauce MAKES the dish!

Greek Burgers with Tzatziki Sauce

Lamb Burger

  • 1 pound ground lamb
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose Greek Seasoning
  • Pita bread pockets
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Crumbles Feta cheese
  • Cucumber Sauce

Tzatziki Sauce

  • 4 ounces light sour cream
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and grated
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Combine ground lamb and Greek seasoning until well seasoned. Divide into 4 patties, shaping into ovals instead of rounds. Cook over medium heat until no longer pink inside, about 5-6 minutes each side.

Fill pita pocket with lamb patty and add lettuce, tomato, and cucumber sauce.  Sprinkle feta cheese on top and enjoy.

Drain and pat dry grated cucumber. Add to sour cream and combine in a small bowl.

Stir in remaining ingredients and cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours so flavors can blend.

Serving these in pita pockets instead of an entire pita wrap helps make these a bit lighter. The fresh flavors of the lettuce, tomato, and cucumber is refreshing and the feta cheese tops it off deliciously. I hope you give these a try.

Serve this main dish with spanakopita, and hummus appetizers.  I’ll share more recipes from this dinner party soon.
