OSCAR THEMED PARTY IDEAS

oscar themed party

I created the most fun party shoot this weekend, just in time for the Oscars on Sunday night.  I teamed up with Stonefire authentic flatbread to create ideas for an Oscars viewing party, and recipes using their pizza crust and Naan.  The result is a party with a “Best Picture” themed menu.

I’ll be covering some of the diy details throughout the week, and tomorrow I’ll share the recipes I created using the flatbread {they’re so good}.  First up, check out the overall look and how I turned each picture nominee in to a menu item.

  • I wanted to do something different for this party design, instead of the typical “table against the wall with a backdrop”.   Since my inspiration was menu focused I decided to set up my round table in the middle of the room with the idea that guests can move freely around the table from one selection to another.  Draped with a black tablecloth {large size sheet} and a “red carpet” runner {felt fabric needs no sewing} the table was ready to go.
  • Instead of a backdrop I made a festive “chandelier” using embroidery hoops, and Mylar fringe from the party store.  It adds just a touch of sparkle above the table.
  • To decorate the table I placed a centerpiece of white tulips, and a few movie themed signs.  Gold movie reel canisters are used as risers for a couple of plates, and themed food markers describe what is being served.

  • As you move  around the table, you begin with the savory items, then the sweets, and finally a mini popcorn bar.  The cocktail bar is set up separately on a bar cart.
  • Oscars themed cookies from Eleni’s Cookies are also provided and make great take home favors as well.  There are “best actress,” “best actor,” and “best picture” themed cookies, and I set out decorative bags for guests to fill.
  • The food markers were made to resemble the envelopes that hold the winner of each category.

Menu based on “Best Picture” nominees:

  1. American Hustle – This movie is set in the 70′s so I chose the classic onion soup mix dip with chips.  Nothing says 70′s to me quite like that dip!
  2. Dallas Buyer’s Club – Since this movie is in Texas, I created a Texas bbq pizza {recipe link below}.  Texans are all about their barbeque beef!
  3. Wolf of Wall Street – As this movie takes place in the “The Big Apple” of New York city, I created “the big apple” pizza {recipe link below}.
  4. Captain Phillip – I had to incorporate seafood for this movie theme.  I created an Alfredo crab meat pizza that’s delicious {recipe link below}.
  5. Philomena – For this movie about an English lady, I served open faced cucumber tea sandwiches of course!
  6. 12 Years a Slave – This movie takes place in Louisiana, so I chose a traditional Southern dish – ham biscuits.
  7. Gravity – I added a bit of whimsy with this movie, and served Moon Pies complete with a flag on top!
  8. Her – This was a tough one, but since one of the scenes takes place in a carnival setting I chose to serve cotton candy sticks, placed in champagne glasses.
  9. Nebraska – There are a lot of scenes that take place in a bar in this move, so obviously this is our bar scene too!

I hope these ideas inspired you to host your own party next Sunday.  It was such fun to come up with menu items based on the best picture nominees.  Who do you want to win?!
