Virtual House Tour – Building Our New Home

model home tour

The new house love affair continues as I bring you photos of the decorated model that we’re building. I am so pleased with the responses I’ve gotten {both public & private} about this adventure. It seems you guys love seeing new and decorated houses as much as I do! It only makes sense though, since your home is where you entertain. In fact that’s how my passion for parties all began: after we built our current house I had a ball decorating it just so. My style was much different then – more traditional with French influence. This was before kids so everything was always in place and presentable *wink* Anyhow, I had this decorated house so what’s better to do than invite people over for a party?!

I hope I can transform the new house the same way, only this time my style is more classic-contemporary with an eclectic mix {for now anyway}. I’ve been Pinning photos like crazy and my mind is racing with ideas. Of course it will take some time to get it like I want it but I feel very blessed to be able to do it.

So, here’s the model that I first walked into back in early December and literally the words out of my mouth were, “I could just pack my bags and move right in right now.” I honestly didn’t think it was going to be in our budget but we worked the numbers and here we are. Let’s start the tour, shall we….
house tour - entry living roomdining room

  • As you enter the front door, the living room and dining room are on the right and very open and bright. The entry hall is nice and wide too, so everything feels spacious from the beginning. Of course I’m going to HAVE to change out that builders chandelier and put in something more modern and cool.

living and dining dining room dining room

  • As you can see, I took a lot of angles of this area because it’s where I’ll be doing most of my styled shoots. I had to check the lighting from every angle {ocd much?}. Ideally I’d like the 2 rooms to be completely open to one another with columns to divide them. Alas, there’s a load bearing wall there and I don’t think they can work it out that way.

kitchen kitchenmorning room

  • Straight to the back of the house is the kitchen and morning room. You can also see the walk-in pantry between the kitchen and dining room, which I’m super excited about.
  • I chose to go with these cream colored cabinets, a dark granite counter, and light stone tile back splash {very similar to this}. The cabinets have that slightly distressed look. After living in an apartment for so many years in college and after, I’ve never quite gotten an affinity for darker wood cabinets. I just NEED the light airy feel of white or cream.

family room

  • The kitchen looks into the family room, and there in the corner is the door to what will be my office. It will be nice to have it down stairs for a change.
  • We’re also adding a fireplace on that far wall, and the floor will be hardwood like the rest of the main level, instead of carpet. We chose a slightly darker wood finish than what’s here.
  • I am definitely going to have to get some new furniture for this room, or maybe recover our current sofa(?).

master bedroommaster

  • The master bedroom is large with a walk in closet in the corner (the first of 2). I think I’m going to claim this closet and let my husband have the one in the bathroom. In fact I’m toying with the idea of turning that little sitting area into a “dressing room” area separated by long draping curtains. It all looks very Hollywood glam in my mind.

master bath

  • The master bath has the 2nd walk in closet – 2 closets was a “must have” on our list. The bathroom itself isn’t huge {we looked at one house who’s master bath was the size of a kids bedroom} but it’s got all the required amenities we wanted: the 2nd closet, a water closet, separate tub & shower, taller vanity height, tile floor & surround, and the oil rubbed bronze fixtures – what more do we really need?

loft common areakids room boys roomgirls room

  • The bonus room/loft was another big selling feature for us. It’s an open room with the 2 kid’s bedrooms on each side. It’s perfect for them {and us} to hang out and play games, use the computer, or watch movies.
  • Also upstairs is the laundry room and guest room.

basement basement

  • Finally, maybe the biggest decision making factor of all is the walk-out basement we’re getting with this house. We’ve always wanted a basement but they’re not standard in the South like they are up North, so you have to either have a sloped lot or a sump pump, and the water table has to be low enough. Luckily we got one of the last basement/sloped lots available so it walks right out to the yard. Our basement won’t be finished right away, but hoping to get that done within a year or two after we move in. Not sure how we’ll divide the space but we’ll have a full bathroom down there, and we’re already talking about a small wine cellar/closet(?). Aside from that, we will need a good size storage room {unfinished}, maybe a workout space, and a good ole fashioned family rec room with a dry bar. If you have any suggestions on what’s worked for you in a basement, I’d love to hear.

After seeing many houses and then narrowing it down to 3 contenders in the end, I’ve come to the conclusion that there isn’t necessarily a “perfect” house {unless you design it yourself}. There are certainly a few things I’d like to be a little different, but overall this house fits our needs to a tee. The open plan and bright spaces made me feel at home from the first moment I stepped inside and I think that’s how you’re supposed to feel about your nest, right? I feel like there’s room to breath and we’ll never feel “crowded” here.

Can’t you just visualize the parties happening in there, now?! Of course, you’re all invited! Cheers!

  10. Hi Chris,
I see you are building with Ryan Homes, correct? I believe that is one of their models. I just wanted to tell you that we have a Ryan Home (Dorsey Hall model) and we love it!! The building experience was very easy and they are so easy to work with. Our entry way looks similar and our kitchen/morning room is almost identical to your pics in configuration. We chose all dark woods, cabinets and granite though. If you want to see what your kitchen would look like in a different color scheme, feel free to check out my blog. Also, I took pics of our model home here in our neighborhood and it has the same kitchen too if you want to see it with cherry floors and cabinets. I posted all of the model pics on my blog too, I believe. Just scroll down the right side until you see “our home” under the labels section. It will bring up all my posts about the building of our home. Congrats and know that you are going to love your new house!

    • Oh, how fun, Brandy! Yes, we’ve been very please with everyone we’ve worked with so far. I love your dark floors! And I also love the dark (almost black) cabinets too – so modern – I just couldn’t commit to it for the long haul (I know I’d be wanting white again sometime.LOL).
Thanks for sharing. I love talking houses & home decor!

  11. Wow! the house is beautiful. It’s perfect for entertaining and people will really enjoy coming over for many parties at your house. I’m thrilled you’re able to do this. My husband and I had been looking at homes and it’s so fun! Imagining living in them. We have to put our on hold for awhile so I’ll live vicariously through you and your new home. Congratulations!

  12. Well shoot. I didn’t notice any rooms with my name on them. Because I am totally moving in. It looks amazing!!!! Congrats friend. What a fun experience! I look forward to following along.

    • Oh, to the contrary my friend. Yours is the aqua colored room up there. I’ll leave the light on for ya!

  13. Beautiful!! I found this blog because my husband and I are building a new home, too (through Drees Homes)! Looks like you chose a fab floor plan :)
