Racing cars is such a classic theme for little boys birthday parties and with the release of the movie Cars 2 it’s a great chance to add a contemporary twist. Photographer Sako of Sky Blue Seed sent in these photos she shot of a 4th birthday party colored in red, black, and yellow, with the traditional black and white check pattern.
Sako says: “Julie (mom) wanted to capture the fun of Cars 2 for her son while keeping it modern and unique, not using the commercialized decorations in the party stores. She threw the party at home and had everybody enjoy a barbeque outside with tables decorated in race car flags and topped with handmade felt roads to go with the theme.”

I love the simplified sweets table which showcases the adorable fondant topped cupcakes.
-
Simple treats fill in the space, such as candied apples, lollipops, chocolate dipped marshmallows, twizzlers, and popcorn. Everything is either homemade or store bought for easy prep.
-
The “road” table runner on the seated table is the perfect runner and so easy to do!
-
Plastic buckets filled with arts and crafts supplies are lined up for guests to take home at the end of the party
Sako also tells us that the party was put together in 2 weeks time {sounds like my planning} and I think it just goes to show that a cute party can be created on a budget and on a short timeline.

How adorable! I wished I had seen this blog post before I had my son’s birthday party. Very cute ideas! See what I did here: http://maidmarianmade.blogspot.com/2011/12/made-lightning-mcqueen-birthday-party.html
Thanks so much for featuring this party~ looking forward to getting ideas for my own daughter’s upcoming birthday party from your site!
I see you highlighted a number of phrases in your post but none are links. I was looking for instructions to make the highway table runner, as well as the lollipops.
Kristin,
The table runner is simply black felt with white felt strips lined down the middle. No sew required.
The lollipops are from any candy shoppe online such as Candy.com. Do a Google search for swirl lollipops & you should have no problem finding them.
Good luck!
So cute! What a great party. So many inspiring ideas.
Planning a 4th birthday party for my girl. She loves cars, any idea? Thanks!
i wanted to know what kind of material was the “road” made of and where i can find some???
Maribel, the black road & white lines are made of felt fabric.
Love this! This is so helpful. I’m planning my soon to be 8 year old nephews birthday & he loves cars
