A Wine & Cheese Gathering

I recently hosted a Wine & Cheese themed gathering for the ladies. I decorated with earthy colors and natural/rustic elements (the center dish in the photos held cheese cubes but I took photos before putting them out). Some of the details I added are:

  • Paper cones filled with snacks and inserted into a wine bottle holder.
  • I filled a glass jar with wine corks for decor.
  • Fun quotes about wine were displayed.
  • Each glass had a hang tag with a conversation starter on it.

Simple-Elegance doesn’t get much better than Cheese & Wine. The pairing of the 2 works equally well for a rustic picnic, or a glamorous soiree. The photos above offer some great suggestions for setting up your wine and cheese party with style.

  • Consider slicing your hard cheese into ‘sticks’ and laying them in a criss-cross form…adds height and interest.
  • Looking for great ways to label which cheese is which? Use pieces of slate or broken terra cotta pots to write on with chalk, or marker.
  • More home-improvement-store materials to use are small slabs of granite, or ceramic tiles.
  • Find mirror ‘trays’ at local craft stores, or use your all-purpose white dishes for a streamlined look.
  • For best results when tasting your cheeses, serve on plain baguette slices or water crackers so as not to mask the flavor of the cheese itself.

PARTY TIP: Print out these conversation starters and tie them on to glass stems so guests can get to know each other better.

Wine & Cheese Pairings

  • Salty Gorgonzola with Sweet Reisling
  • Brie with a California Chardonay
  • Goat Cheese (Chevre) with Savignon Blanc
  • Edam or Havarti with Pinot Noir
  • Gouda with Merlot or Reisling

What appetizers to serve

You’ll definitely want to include traditional accompaniments like marinated olives or jardiniere, nuts, grapes, apples, or pears, and sweet spreads or jams.

Favorite wines under $15

Some of my favorite wines for around $10-$12.

  • Cavit Pinot Grigio
  • Chateau St. Michelle Reisling (not overly sweet…it’s just right!)
  • Barefoot Moscato (around $7, but very good with the taste of muscadine grapes)
  • Rober Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir
  • Woodbridge Cabernet (not too heavy for a cab)

Have fun planning and tasting your own wine and cheese party combinations!

  1. Hello. I love this theme. I was wondering if you wouln't mind sharing what was written on the glass stem labels? I'd like to do the same.

  2. I love the colors you used! This party is picture perfect! I love the vase with wine corks and grapes hanging out. My boyfriend has asked me to start collecting all the wine corks from the bottles we drink and there is starting to be enough to display! I had no idea what I'd ever use them for but this is a great solution!

Cant wait to see the rest of the pics on FB!

  7. Ok where should I start with the things I love list…. How 'bout everything! Especially the creative use of the wine bottle holder! Are those bottles for the water and lemonade from Ikea? I bought the same thing, can't wait to use them! Great Job!

  8. Thank You!

Lisalyn, those twig thingies came from Michaels. They were on sale & actually had a string attached to hang them. I didn't have any idea what I would do with them at the time, but they were cool enough to keep in my party stash! ; D
